An exploration of the human face and questions of the heart
by Jacqueline Véissid
I’ve always been captivated by the timeless quality of the human face and how it is portrayed through art. The emotion in the eyes, a tilt of the head, an expression — these subtle details can reveal so much about what the subject might have been thinking or feeling.
Using vintage museum postcards of painted portraits, I invite the viewer to focus solely on the face. Everything else — clothing, background, context — is softly obscured beneath a thin layer of vellum. Though centuries may separate us, time seems to fall away — our faces tell a shared story.
Cut-out words from an out-of-print edition of The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales are pieced together, forming questions or statements that speak to the painted subjects… or perhaps to you, the viewer. The interpretation is yours.
